Cleaning Your Plastic Shower Curtain or Plastic Liner...

I know many of us have a pretty little shower curtian and a plastic shower liner. Some of us may have just a plastic shower curtain. It's very easy to wash a shower curtain made of cloth- you just toss it in the washing machine and then the dryer. But did you know that you can wash your plastic shower curtain and/or plastic liner in the washing machine, too? YES!!!!

I took our plastic shower curtain liner down today, put it in the washing machine, set the water temperature to "hot", poured in about a 1/2 cup of laundry detergent and a cup of bleach. I let it wash as usual and then took it out and hung it back up to dry. Guess what? It looks WONDERFUL!!!!! Our water leaves a bluish tint on things unless they are washed regularly and washing the shower curtains this way took ALL the bluish tint off!!!!

So in case y'all didn't know, you CAN wash plastic shower curtains and/or plastic shower curtain liners in the washing machine. I just wouldn't recommend putting them in the dryer! The plastic could melt! OH NO!!!!

I need to give mine a go in the washer. Since we have a claw-foot bathtub, it takes three shower curtains to go around the entire tub...last time I tried washing the curtains, I put all three in at once. I think I'll try one at a time and see if it will work out better.

I washed plastic shower curtains in the washer with no problem for years. Then, one year, we moved to a new city. While looking for a place to buy, we rented a house from a family who were going to be out of the state for a year. During that time, I washed their irreplacable shower curtain with a tropical scene on it in the washer. I don't know what happened, but the curtain came out in shreads! It was a particular favorite of the husband's, for some reason, and I looked everywhere, but could not find it.

That was a house of minor disasters for us. After we bought a home a mile away, we left on vacation. A neighbor boy was watching our cat for us. The cat got out, traveled the mile back to the rental place, and went in through that house's cat door. Our cat had greatly enjoyed that cat door, using it to go in an out to hunt and often bringing us little presents -- such bringing us LIVE birds, squirrels, etc. Well, when our cat returned through that cat door, the owners' cat was in their kitchen, and our cat attacked it! Ever since then, I have not wanted a house with a pet door.

I meant to say that I looked everywhere and could not find a replacement curtain for the one I shredded in the washer.

Wow, Tammy! I've never thought about it taking more than one shower curtain to go around a claw foot tub!!! How interesting!!

Elizabeth, how horrible to have that happen to something in a house you were renting!! OH DEAR!!!!! How do you wash plastic shower curtains/liners now?? Still in the washing machine??

I have done this. We live in an area with really hard water. It removes all of the hard water stains.

I wash mine in the washer too. It's funny you should post about it today - it was on my list of things to do for the day and I'd forgotten to get it into the washer. Thanks!

YES! I do this too. Just did one a few months ago & it came out sparkling clean. Hang it outside to drip try & it's like new. They don't last forever though, but they're so cheap & easy to replace after a couple of years.

I also washed my plastic liner this week. So funny you should post this. I wash mine with a towel, a little laundry soap and a 1/4 cup of vinegar. Seems to take the soap residue off. Then I line dry it.

I will have to try this because my liner is looking quite "yucky;o)" This is one of the reasons I love blogging so much ~ you get so many wonderful helpful hints!! Okay, time to get busy and take my shower liner down!

I always put mine in the dryer for just a minute or two after washing it in the washer with a towel. Take it right out and hang it up...Perfect!

Hello,

I was our plastic shower curtain liner in the wash with 1 or 2 towels. The towels help "scrub" the dirt off and the liner comes out perfect. No dryer though!

A side note, it is astonishing how quickly a liner gets, um... YUCKY.

I have always washed both my fabric and plastic liners in the the washer. I usually throw them in with a towel or cleaning rags or the mop head or something else. I also always toss the platic ones in the dryer. I use a cool setting and it only takes maybe 10 minutes but they come out really soft and wrinkle-free. If I hang it immediately, it looks better than new! For older liners, they can be soaked in your favorite bleaching or laundering solution for an hour or even overnight to remove old stains. They almost always come out fantastic!

Thanks for the tip! I've got a new baby in the house and I was about to soak my liner & scrub it, but throwing it in the wash will be so much faster, and anything to save time is invaluable!!
