Do you use Nutrasweet (Aspartame)?

Well, after reading of SO many of y'all that have also given up Diet Coke or another diet drink, I started reading online about Nutrasweet (also known as Aspartame). I wasn't super concerned about the caffeine I had been consuming, although caffeine is not healthy for you, either. I was mostly concerned about Nutrasweet.

I found a movie online about it called Sweet Misery. Oh boy, is this eye-opening!!! Maybe y'all have seen this before, but I hadn't. I DEFINITELY will NOT go back to Diet Coke or anything that contains Aspartame!!!

You can watch the movie here.

And how am I doing? Well, today is day 6 of no Diet Coke. So far, I haven't had any headaches. WOW!!! But, I have thought about having a Diet Coke MANY times!! And, somehow, snacking doesn't sound nearly as fun because I don't have a Diet Coke to go with it!!!!! HAAH!!!

And don't be surprised, y'all, if sales of Diet Coke go down. With all that I was drinking and buying, I was keeping them in business, I'm pretty sure. :)

I avoid aspartame like the plague. I have done enough research to know that it is not good for you! I don't have the time right this minute to watch that video you posted a link to, but it sounds as if it is a good wake-up call. The things that the FDA will label "food"...

Wonderful news about not drinking soda. How do you feel? I mean, have you noticed any difference in how your body feels?

Hey girl, good for you! I think you are doing amazing on this. Thanks for sharing the aspartime thing.

I use agave nectar. Never used the aspartame stuff. The nectar is sweet and will help you train your palate away from the bad stuff. Best wishes!

I have also stopped using aspartame. I had a migraine that paralyzed me on one side of my body for a few weeks. The neurologist told me to get off of diet cokes. I have never had another one since!

I drink a diet Coke or two per day with no ill affects.

I've read about the dangers of it before (didn't read the particular reference you posted) and I just think that with the amount being consumed by Americans every day for the past 20 years we'd be seeing some ill effects by now. I don't know of one person who has suffered due to his/her consumption of diet soft drinks, with the exception of a couple of people who just don't tolerate one particular sweetener or other, digestively speaking. I know a lot more people who can't handle nuts, or milk, etc.

Also, as for the argument that it turns to wood alcohol in the stomach, not only do I think we'd have a few big lawsuits by blinded people by now, the fact is many things we consume (the cyanide in apple seeds for example) are genuinely alarming until you realize your stomach is a bag of hydrochloric acid and obliterates most scary sounding stuff.

I am not trying to rain on your parade, though, just responding to your question, and if you feel better skipping diet Coke, more power to you.

I usually use Splenda...it's the only artifical sweetener that I can stand the taste of. LOVE your blog, btw!

Wow, thanks for this info. After reading your blog, I checked things out on the Internet. YUK! I'm never drinking another diet coke again!

Many years ago, I stopped drinking all diet drinks because they gave me headaches. I slowly eliminated them and my headaches went away. I started using Stevia in all my drinks and it has been great.

I have stopped Aspertame and SPLENDA (google Splenda side effects you will be shocked)...it is hard because both are hidden in many things....
Congratulations you can do this.

For the past three weeks I have ceased any intake of asparthame or nutrasweet. I knew it wasn't healthy, but I decided that it was time to do something about it. Congrats on quitting the DC (though Coca-Cola wouldn't say that).
